According to the U.S. State Department, a single citizen can be issued both a passport card and a passport book. The passport card is only used for entering the United States at land border crossings or seaports-of-entry from select adjacent international destinations: Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. The passport book is still used for all international air travel. The State Department notes that while a single individual can be issued both passport formats, each one would bear a different serial number.
